Things that have caught my attention:
- Tommy has a big fit on the football field: I think Kathy has such a close connection with Tommy that she went over to help Tommy despite all the girls watching her. Ruth seems to be the type of friend that may influence her decisions even though that decision was based all on Kathy.
"But I'd had enough of him by now, particularly with the girls watching - and for all I knew, any number of others from the window of the main house" (Ishiguro, 11).
I believe that this shows how Kathy's kevel of tolerance was lower since all of her friends were watching.
- Tommy not having a temper anymore because of Ms. Lucy: It was hard for Kathy to understand how Tommy changed so quickly to being more calm. He didn't fit in with anyone and now he didn't care but Ms. Lucy does. (Ms. Lucy told Tommy that it was okay that he wasn't creative or artistic even though it was a very big deal at this school.) She had a talk with him which makes me curious about where Ms. Lucy stands in this society and what she may know that she is hiding.
" 'That's what she told you?' Tommy nodded but I was already turning away" (Ishiguro, 23).
I think that this quote shows how Kathy is hard-headed to the words that Ms. Lucy told Tommy.
- Mysterious Madame: This woman is someone that hasn't really been explained other than she comes and takes the best artwork from the children to take to the "gallery". The kids always see her as someone who is scared of them and never interacts with them at all. She comes once a month and leaves. Mysterious? Very!
" 'If she doesn't like us, why does she want our work? Why doesn't she just leave us alone? Who asks her to come here anyways?' " ( Ishiguro, 35).
This is a quote from Laura who was in a bunch of girls who tried to startle Madame to see if she was scared of them. It didn't work at all!
- Ruth: Ruth is one of Kathy's friends who decided to invite Kathy horse-back riding one day and since then, they were friends. What I thought was interesting and is definentely a cliff-hanger, is how Ruth randomly starts talking about Miss Geraldine and if Kathy liked her. Right now, she also remains a mystery like Madame!
" 'Do you like Miss Geraldine?' It might have been the first time I'd actually thought about whether I liked a guardian... '... I'll let you be one of her secret guards" (Ishiguro, 47).
This makes me think that maybe ruth knows something about Miss Geraldine and just maybe, after the book starts unfolding, Ms. Lucy and Ms. Geraldine's secrets will connect?!
